The Fan Favorites Based on Real Life Events

Before they were major blockbuster movies adored by millions, they were books. Before they were books, which themselves sold millions of copies worldwide, they were true life stories. Here are two of those stories that made it from life to book to movie, becoming two of the world;s favorites in the process.

Room By Emma Donoghue. Donoghue’s compelling 2010 novel Room brings us the heartbreaking story of a mother and young son held captive in a small room. The book was written from the boy’s perspective, and later turned into a major motion picture in 2015 starring Brie Larson and a very young Jacob Tremblay. Horrific as it may be to think of, the novel was actually based on the real life story of Elizabeth Fritzl, who had been held captive by her father for 24 years and had given birth to 7 children in that time.

The Fault in Our Stars by John Green. John Green’s 2012 novel The Fault in Our Stars tells the tragic tale of a chance encounter between a 16 year old girl with thyroid cancer and a 17 year old ex-basketball player and amputee. The book was adapted into a major motion picture of the same name in 2014, which starred Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort. The book was based on the true story of Esther Earl, who Green met at a Harry Potter conference, who had released her own book posthumously.
