The Fandom Culture: From Books to Memes

The term “fandom” is interesting in that it can be broken down into two words to explain it perfectly: “fan”, coming from the word “fanatic”, and “dom”, meaning a state or condition. In essence, being in a “fanatic state”.

Fandom has always existed, we just notice it more nowadays because of the internet, allowing us to connect with people with similar interests from around the world. It’s given fans of their particular entertainment interest a platform for discussing everything and anything they’re obsessed about. Take the Harry Potter series, for example. It’s created such a huge fanbase that people have created all sorts of things to help them and other fans understand the story in more depth. The Ultimate Harry Potter and Philosophy: Hogwarts for Muggles, by William Irwin and Gregory Bassham, discusses the entire book series as one big philosophical examination. This is a clear example of that fan creation, and something every Harry Potter fan would want.

The world of fandom has even given way to the usage of memes, which are images or videos that spread like wildfire by people on the internet. Superfans create these memes to further connect their lives with that of their favorite characters. Whatever the entertainment is, fandom takes pleasure in camaraderie; being with others who share the same interest as you is a freeing feeling.

From great oldies to exciting new content, if people are reading it or watching it, you probably should too! Well, that’s what fandom attempts at doing; pulling people in. So, being in this “fanatic state” brings people together with the intention of bonding over a particular interest in something. It’s actually quite an amazing product of human nature. The sense of community, or being in a special club, is one of the most important aspects of fandom...other than the thing the fans are binging on, of course! On our website, www.gotitles.com, find popular titles, like the one mentioned above, that you’d obsess about and join the growing community of fandom.
