A tried and true fan favorite for multiple generations, there’s no denying the impact Star Wars has had on our culture. Here are three facts about the beloved franchise that you may not have known.
Luke almost turned to the dark side. As rumor has it, in 1982 George Lucas toyed with the idea of giving Return of the Jedi a drastically different ending, one in which Luke turns to the dark side. In a story development session for the film, Lucas thought of taking the dramatic father/son scene in which Luke removes Darth Vader’s helmet a step further by having Luke put on the helmet and declare himself the new Vader.
What is Yoda? While many other characters, both principal and background, have their species clearly defined, there is not one mention of Yoda’s species in any of the films. The mystery may have been intentional, giving fans even more to ponder about the enigmatic Jedi master.
Similarities in space. Star Wars and 2001: A Space Odyssey share nearly the same production crew. George Lucas was a big fan of the Stanley Kubrick masterpiece, and so, when production began on Star Wars he set out to hire as many people involved in its production as he could. Given how many people involved in the making of Star Wars had worked on 2001: A Space Odyssey, the crew was referred to as “The Class of 2001.”
