Now that Netflix is out of the picture, fans wonder if there’s any future for Marvel superhero shows. It came as no surprise to see Netflix announce the cancellation of The Punisher after two seasons and Jessica Jones after the upcoming third season, fans have been expecting the axe to fall ever since the cancellations of Daredevil, Iron Fist, Luke Cage, and The Defenders. There’s no secret as to why, although it’s still only speculation Disney is in the process of making aggressive bids to regain control over all characters in the Marvel Universe, and with their own on-demand streaming service, Disney +, in the works, there may be another chance to see these characters in the future.
In the meantime, just what can we expect to see when it comes to new Marvel shows? Well, it’s first worth noting that the end of our beloved Marvel-Netflix alliance doesn’t mean the end of all current Marvel shows. Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has been going strong for five seasons on ABC with a sixth season about to air and a seventh in pre-production. All the while Marvel's Runaways is in its second season on Hulu, and Cloak & Dagger will begin airing their second season later this year on ABC.
For the upcoming launch of Disney + Marvel is already hard at work on show focusing on such characters as Loki, the Scarlet Witch, and Falcon, which will tie in to the MCU movies. As for the characters that Netflix made us love, although the Marvel-Netflix contract stipulates that the characters can’t be used by a non-Netflix entity for two years after cancellation, we can only hope that Marvel won’t leave leave fans disappointed for too long...
