It’s always easiest to introduce kids to reading at a young age, especially when you read aloud to them and get their imaginations going right from the get go. But what about older kids who may not have shown the same interest from the start? It’s never too late to get your kids into reading, and here are three tips for the older kids.
Get them started with graphic novels. Graphic novels provide the visual stimulation kids are used to from their screens, but with plenty of words to pick up from the pages and a whole lot left to the imagination. They’re great on their own, but often serve as a gateway to more traditional books as well.
Set up a reward system. Do your kids love video games? Maybe for every ten books they read you could buy them the new game they’re dying to get their hands on. Reward systems make for excellent motivators, and it’s win/win for the kids when they get something they want and get to read some great books too!
Have them read to the younger kids. If your older kids read picture books aloud to their younger siblings, they’ll not only improve their own reading skills but will feel like their helping raise their siblings too. It’s a great way to not just get them into reading, but to introduce them to the responsibility of being big brothers and sisters.
