Some are still old enough to remember the hostage situation that was cable television. Bloated packages filled with channels you’d never watch, all to catch one or two networks, which would each offer one or two shows you actually wanted to watch. The rest was just fluff. Very Expensive fluff.
Netflix changed the game with an impressive library of on-demand content, and all for a low monthly fee. It was nothing short of a golden era. Sure, they didn’t have everything, but they had enough to keep you entertained, and all for a reasonable price. Those days are over.
Despite all their original content, to this day, the most watched show on Netflix remains the US version of The Office. In fact, one report stated that The Office accounted for 7% of all US Netflix viewing. It’s no surprise, then, that NBC is claiming it back as early as January 2021 to make it available on their NBCUniversal streaming platform. And NBC isn’t alone. Disney’s upcoming Disney+ streaming service will mean no more Marvel, Star Wars, or Fox content on Netflix. Amazon Prime has claimed some significant titles of their own, and as if all that wasn’t enough, Apple has thrown their hat in as well.
Feeling queasy is understandable. Whereas once you could get your fill with one, maybe two subscriptions, you’ll now have to pay for as many as five or six to get all the content you want. IT’s a return to the days of overpriced and over bloated cable packages, only this time you won’t even have the convenience of paying for one single bill.
